We place some animals in the homes of foster care volunteers who take care of them temporarily. The foster care program helps to save lives by giving a second chance to animals who need special attention and would otherwise have a hard time becoming ready for adoption. Once the animals are ready to be adopted, they are returned to the shelter. Interested in fostering? They provide unconditional love, companionship and a reason to get out and walk (even if it’s just a short one). Studies have shown that the simple act of petting a dog or cat can reduce blood pressure and stress levels. Senior pets are especially suited for senior citizens because they are generally calmer, more even-tempered, require less vigorous exercise and often already have been trained in important issues like housebreaking and litter box use. With an adult pet, their personality is already developed and compatible characteristics are easier to identify. Older pets that have been uprooted from their homes are likely to bond completely and deeply with their new human caretakers who they view as heroes. The Cortland Community SPCA now offers a Seniors for Seniors program. This program is for anyone 65 years of age or older who adopts a pet seven years of age or older. With an approved application, the adoption fee will be reduced by 50%.
Recycling Clothes and Rescuing AnimalsIt is always good news when a company comes to Cortland with a commitment to “doing well by doing good”. The Community Thrift Store (CTS), a recycling company operating out of the Binghamton area and doing business across the Southern Tier, has a unique community oriented model that combines reducing the waste stream and sharing the benefits with local charitable organizations. Today CTS announced a novel collaboration with the Cortland County SPCA and presented this important local organization with a first check for over $500.“We are thrilled and honored to be chosen as the Community Thrift Store's local anchor charity institution in Cortland County” exclaimed Kathryn Totman, Cortland County SPCA Board Chair. As the anchor charity, the Cortland County SPCA receives a donation and monthly stipend for every “Blue Bin” placed in Cortland County. In addition, the owner of the site where a bin is placed gets to name a charity of their choice and CTS makes a one-time donation and monthly contributions to that charity. “It is doubly exciting, when we are the named charity as well, because we are eligible for both payments” said CCSPCA Treasurer Shawn Roser. The Community Thrift Store has become a major regional recycler of clothing and any other materials (including towels, drapes, sheets, leather, etc.) diverting over 80,000 pounds of recyclable materials every month from local landfills. “I have been committed to community development and reducing the waste stream for over 50 years” said Les Platt the owner of CTS. CTS intends to hire a local person as soon as the volume justifies it, which is estimated at 20 bin sites. “We would like to see this movement grow and work out for everyone. The more Blue Bins that are placed in Cortland the greater the benefits for everyone” stated Ms.Roser.
